Why Your Moving Truck Feels Smaller Than It Should (Because It Is)

TL;DR — Key Takeaways

  • Moving truck size charts use advertised cubic footage, not real usable space — actual capacity runs 15-20% lower once wheel wells and irregular items are factored in.
  • Renting the “bare minimum” size is exactly how second trips and curbside furniture happen — always book one size up.
  • Oversized items (pianos, extra fridges, motorcycles, packed garages) aren’t accounted for in generic size charts, and can push you up a full truck size.
  • Ask for interior dimensions, not just the truck’s name — “20-foot truck” describes the outside.
  • Be honest about your packing style when estimating — loose packers need meaningfully more room than tight packers.
  • Use the free size calculator to get a realistic recommendation in under a minute, including a portable-container equivalent.

I spent five years running a portable storage business, and if there’s one call I got more than any other, it was this: “The truck fit fine when we did the math, so why is there no room left?”

Here’s the part nobody tells you when you’re standing in a rental lot squinting at a size chart: the cubic footage printed on that moving truck is the advertised number. It assumes your boxes stack like bricks, with zero wasted space, no wheel wells eating into the floor, and nothing oddly shaped in the mix. Real moves don’t work that way. A dresser with legs, a mattress that can’t be stood on its side because it’ll bow, a box of picture frames you’re not stacking anything on top of — all of that eats capacity the chart never accounted for.

So people rent the size the chart tells them to rent, and they end up making a second trip, leaving furniture on the curb, or paying a crew to “figure it out” for another two hours. It’s one of the most common complaints you’ll find buried in moving company reviews, and it’s almost never framed as a sizing problem, it just shows up as “the truck wasn’t big enough” or “they said it would all fit.”

The fix isn’t a bigger chart. It’s a more honest one.

Most moving truck size guides just repeat the manufacturer’s numbers. We built ours differently: it takes the advertised capacity, knocks it down to what you can realistically use, and then tells you the size above the bare minimum because bare minimum is exactly what gets people stuck.

It also accounts for the stuff that generic charts skip entirely: a piano, a spare fridge, a motorcycle, a garage that’s basically become a second storage unit. Those items alone can push you up a full truck size, and most calculators don’t ask about them at all.

If you’re weighing a truck rental against a portable container, it’ll tell you that too, converting your total into how many containers you’d actually need, so you’re not guessing there either.

HOME MOVING SECRETS

What size truck
do you actually need?

Most size charts use the manufacturer’s advertised cubic footage — the number that assumes perfectly stacked boxes and no wheel wells. This one doesn’t.

STEP 1

Home size

Pick the closest match. You’ll fine-tune it below.

STEP 2

Anything oversized?

Tap what applies — these eat truck space fast and are the #1 reason people run out of room.

STEP 3

How do you pack?

Be honest — this changes the recommendation more than people expect.

Answer the steps above to see your size.
⚠ Why one size up: advertised truck capacity assumes perfect stacking. We build in real-world room for odd-shaped items and boxes that don’t fit flush.

cu ft, your stuff

PODS containers, if going that route
Estimates based on typical U.S. household volumes and standard rental truck / container capacities, with a real-world usable-space adjustment applied. Actual needs vary by how much you own — treat this as a planning starting point, not a guarantee. Not affiliated with U-Haul, PODS, or any specific carrier.

This tool provides an estimate only. Always verify final sizing and pricing directly with your chosen truck rental company or storage provider before booking.

A few things I’d tell you even without a moving truck size calculator

  • Round up, always. If you’re between two sizes, take the bigger one. An extra $30-40 in rental cost is nothing next to a second trip or an overnight in a truck you can’t return on time.
  • Ask about the interior dimensions, not just the name. “20-foot truck” describes the outside. What you’re loading goes in the inside, and that number is smaller than you’d guess.
  • Irregular items cost you more space than their size suggests. Anything you can’t stack on (lamps, mirrors, mattresses, art) effectively “wastes” the space above it. Budget for that, don’t fight it.
  • Packing style matters more than people admit. If you’re not the type to Tetris every gap, plan for it. Pretending you’ll pack tighter than you actually will is how trucks run out of room at 6pm on moving day.

Run your numbers through the calculator before you book anything, it takes about a minute, and it’s the difference between one trip and two.
